Point of View
The Boy Who Dared is written in the 3rd person point of view throughout the story . We know this because the author (Susan Campbell Bartoletti) labels the characters by their born names, avoiding word choices such as "I" or "me".
Tone and Mood
To begin, tone is the author's attitude in his or her writing. A work of writing may also have more than one tone. In this specific novel, the author uses the tone of acceptance and depression in the beginning (dark). This tone remains the same throughout the book, except for the foreshadowing, which is desperation and hopelessness. An example of this includes the saying," On the ground floor, the light shifts dark shapes into a small stool, a scrawny table, and a bed made of wooden boards with no mattress of blanket." This reflects upon the authors attitude or emotion of devistation in her work. On the other hand, mood is the state of feelings or reaction the reader has from the author's work.In the case of this novel, the modds allows the viewers to be surprised of certain elements as well as sympathetic. The mood remains the same throughout the novel, disreguarding the foreshadowing which is gloomy.A statement made by the author to make the reader feel this way is, "Helmuth uses the slop bucket again, a handful of cut-up newspaper squares in his hans. He picks out the one with Hitler's name and uses those to scrape himself." This astonishes and surprises the viewer since the protagonist accepted the views of Hitler in the beginning.

Internal conflict is a mental or emotional battle within the character itself. In this case, Helmuth battles with his inner decisions and thoughts. This is when he struggles to find his identity, whether it's with the Nazi tribe, or against Hitler's power.
Protagonist
Helmuth Hubener, the main character of the book, was the protagonist of the story because he apposed a racist force called the Nazis and when he did somethings against the Nazis is was for the sake of doing the right thing.
Antagonist
Above all the antagonist in the story, the Nazis were the most obvious of them all. The Nazis, a group of people who took over the German government when Germany was in a Depression, participated in things that discriminated the jews. This is wrong and it apposed Helmuth's feelings and beliefs. This is an example of person versus society and government.
